Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, into one of India’s most prominent industrialist families, the Tata family.
He studied architecture at Cornell University and later attended the Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program.
Ratan Tata started his career in 1961 working on the shop floor of Tata Steel, earning practical experience.
He became chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, succeeding J.R.D. Tata, and led the conglomerate for over two decades.
Under his leadership, Tata Group made major global acquisitions, including Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley Tea.
Ratan Tata is renowned for launching the Tata Nano, the world’s most affordable car, aimed at making vehicle ownership accessible in India.
A major portion of Tata’s earnings was directed toward social causes through the Tata Trusts, focusing on education, healthcare, and rural development.
During his tenure, the Tata Group’s revenues grew over 40 times, transforming the company into a global powerhouse.
Known for his integrity and humility, Ratan Tata remained unmarried and focused much of his life on building the Tata legacy.
Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons, passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86.
